Tomorrow is November 11, Veterans Day, an annual American holiday honoring military Veterans. When I was the Vice President of Advertising with American Poker Player Magazine in 2005, the charity that we supported was the Wounded Warrior Project. This organization concentrated on assisting veterans of the 101st Screaming Eagle Airborne Division.
I would like to encourage everyone to make a donation, no matter how large or small to any charity supporting and honoring veterans. On the other hand, rather than a money donation, look at Operation Military Shoebox.
Think of putting together a care package in a shoebox. Some suggested items include:
- Canned fruit with pop top lidsZiploc bags
- Toothpaste & toothbrush
- Individual ready-made pudding cups
- Baby wipes in small packets
- Gum (candy coated, no sticks)
- Disposable razors
- Chap Stick
- Combs, and much more.
If you ever want to have your heart touched, if you ever want to feel a greater sense of patriotism, if you truly want to know the price of freedom, spend a day passing out homemade cookies at any Veterans Hospital in the United States. Two of the wards that are especially tough on me are the head trauma and the spinal cord injury units. Plan on a good cry after you leave.
God Bless America.
