Poker ABCs – E is for Energy

Everything is energy. From science to science fiction, most people now get it, and paying attention to your energy at the poker table may be a surefire way to stop losing and start playing winning poker.

Albert Einstein got it and proved it with his famous equation E=mc2… at least, they tell me that was what he proved. That I will have to take on faith.

Luke Skywalker caught a glimpse of it when Yoda told him to feel the force between the rock, the land, and the ship. It strengthened him as he made the final run targeting the Death Star, "Feel the Force, Luke… the Force is with you."

This is how I get energy. When something makes me feel strong, it is positive energy, and I want more of it. When something makes me feel weak, it is negative energy, and I avoid it.

Is that too simple? I believe it is, in fact, pure and simple.

Ask and do the following.

Step 1

  • What gives me energy?
  • What makes me powerful?
  • Write it down.
  • Seek it.

Step 2

  • What drains my energy?
  • What makes me feel weak?
  • Write it down.
  • Avoid it.

Life and poker may be as simple as that. As simple as 1-2-3.

  1. Move to the moment. Breathe and consider your options.
  2. Take the action that gives you energy and raises your vibration.
  3. Avoid the action that drains your energy.

And remember my motto…

If you can't raise, don't call.

I only know a smidgen about poker. But if you can't raise then dont call –
Doesn't that mean sometimes you have to fold?
Not sure I like it that black and white compared to life.  Tell me if  I have the wrong
    poker concept.

Great question Ruthan! The intention is to help you evaluate your hand and your position so that you only play hands that are worthy of a raise. That way you increase your probability of being a consistent winner. Too many times players ‘limp’ into a pot, that is, simply make a weak call, with substandard cards or poor position. When the correct action would have been to fold the hand.
