Poker History Made with UIGEA Extension

Poker history made yesterday, November 27, 2009: The United States Federal Reserve and Department of Treasury delayed the implementation by six months of the Unlawful Internet Gambling Enforcement Act (UIGEA) regulations. What does that mean for poker?

It gives legislators extra times to clarify this vague law and to pass legislation to license and regulate poker early in 2010. Is that important to us as poker players. Absolutely! It may be the impetus to finally regulate online poker in the United States.

John Pappas, executive director of the Poker Players Alliance, said he thinks the extension of six months rather than the requested year could actually help poker's cause. It may provide a sense of urgency to those in Congress who support the licensing and regulation of the Internet poker industry.

How did this all come about? Primarily through the efforts of the Poker Players Alliance, the leading poker grassroots advocacy group with more than one million members nationwide. Frankly, this is a model to all Americans that when we stand together and make our voices heard, our government will listen.

Online poker created a new industry: If there is one major industry directly responsible for the poker boom, it is online poker. Think about this. Couple the millions of players that learned how to play the game online starting in 1998, with the impact of the televised final tables of the World Poker Tour first airing in 2002, and we have a new industry that effectively sprang up overnight.

Frankly, legislation like the UIGEA, which strikes fear in our hearts, is one of the reasons our economy has suffered over the last three years. Within the online poker industry, there are billions of dollars of untapped business tax revenues. Where would the United States economy be today if we had had the benefit of those tax dollars over the last 11 years?

Poker history in review: In 2006, the UIGEA became law by default. Some say legislatures debated the issue over the previous ten years; however, no one can deny that the UIGEA became law because it was tacked onto another piece of legislation that is called 'must pass' legislation. The mule, so to speak, was the Safe Port Act, dealing with protecting our ports from terrorism; it was voted on the night before Congress adjourned prior to the 2006 mid-term elections. Does that make you squint your eyes and say, "Hmmm?"

Poker Coaching plus Mindset equals Winning Poker

Recently, during a meet and greet at church, a man hugged me and whispered in my ear. "Hey coach, next week, I'm playing in a tournament to win my entry into the World Series of Poker® main event. Do you think I can do it?"
My internal reaction was, "It doesn't matter what I think, what matters is what you think."
What came out was, "Good for you! Go for it!"
Later during a break, he asked again, "Do you think I can."
When I hesitated, he was more insistent, "Do you think I can?"
I smiled and softly said, "It all depends."
When his face fell, I said, "I know you have what it takes. You are smart and physically fit, but it is just like any other sport, it depends on your feedback system, guidance, and direction. It depends on how determined you are to learning all the aspects of poker. It depends on where the holes are in your game and your commitment to being honest with yourself. "
Poker is like an iceberg, what you see is only a tiny part of the game.
There are three distinct parts of playing winning poker: the physical game, the mind game, and the deeper inner game.
The physical game is apparent and what most training programs teach. How to play this hand or that hand in what position. How to figure your raises to increase the likelihood of your opponents giving up their hand. How and when to bluff. When it makes sense to move all in. How to determine your pot odds.
The physical game has many layers, but it is definable. It is necessary but relatively clear-cut. It is left-brain information with boxes where you tidy up your poker strategy.
Please understand me clearly. I am not underestimating the value of the physical game. It is a critical part of winning poker. It is necessary and a must do. It is one of the areas of winning poker and a vital part of my method of poker coaching. However, it is just the beginning.

Poker Coach Honors American Veterans

Tomorrow is November 11, Veterans Day, an annual American holiday honoring military Veterans. When I was the Vice President of Advertising with American Poker Player Magazine in 2005, the charity that we supported was the Wounded Warrior Project. This organization concentrated on assisting veterans of the 101st Screaming Eagle Airborne Division.

I would like to encourage everyone to make a donation, no matter how large or small to any charity supporting and honoring veterans. On the other hand, rather than a money donation, look at Operation Military Shoebox.

Think of putting together a care package in a shoebox. Some suggested items include:

  • Canned fruit with pop top lidsZiploc bags
  • Toothpaste & toothbrush
  • Individual ready-made pudding cups
  • Baby wipes in small packets
  • Gum (candy coated, no sticks)
  • Disposable razors
  • Chap Stick
  • Combs, and much more.

If you ever want to have your heart touched, if you ever want to feel a greater sense of patriotism, if you truly want to know the price of freedom, spend a day passing out homemade cookies at any Veterans Hospital in the United States. Two of the wards that are especially tough on me are the head trauma and the spinal cord injury units. Plan on a good cry after you leave.

God Bless America.
